I am fascinated by the American Southwest. Having spent my whole life in the Midwest the topography, climate and culture of the Southwest is like traveling to another planet. Add to that the perceived glamour and drama of the Wild West and I find it a fountain of curiosities. Thanks to a year of continuing education trips for my husband we had the opportunity to visit Phoenix several times last year. One day in December it was rainy and chilly so we headed to the lovely Heard Museum..
The Heard has created a perfect balance of historical and contemporary information on the indigenous peoples of the southwest. The exhibits describe the arts, lifestyles and beliefs over centuries, tribes and regions. The crafts of each tribe are displayed with a blend of ancient examples and current artisan’s interpretations. The weaving, pottery, jewelry and sand paintings share a rich culture and history.
