Hotel Catedral in La Paz, Mexico

Last Updated on February 6, 2019 by Janet Frost

I just returned from a week of exploring the Baja Peninsula of Mexico with Tam Warner Minton of Travels With Tam.  The trip was lead by the eco-tour group, Red Travel Mexico. Red Travel did a wonderful job of putting this adventure together and provided us with an amazing private guide for the week.  There are so many things to share about this trip that it will require several posts.  Watch for them over the next few days. While I am still mulling over all the nuances of the experience, I thought I would start with a quick review of the Hotel Catedral in La Paz, accommodations arranged for us by Red Travel.

La Paz, Mexico

La Paz, with a population of over 200,000 is the capital of the Mexico state of Baja California Sur. The city sits in a deep cove of the Sea of Cortez about 2 hours north of its glitzy cousin Cabo San Lucas. I really enjoyed the authenticity and slower pace of La Paz compared to Cabo San Lucas.  The Malecón is a beautiful seafront promenade overlooking the port and offering local shops, eateries and parks.

Nuestra Señora de La Paz Cathedral

In the city center, the 19th-century Nuestra Señora de La Paz Cathedral dominates the shady Velasco Garden. The Hotel Catedral basks in the shadow of this historic edifice.

The Hotel Catedral in La Paz was a comfortable and elegant stay.  The service was impeccable and every nook was spotless. Located in the heart of the city, it offered a lovely mix of old world charm and modern convenience.  It was a short walk down to the Malecón and waterfront.

The hotel restaurant was delicious.  Every morning we enjoyed a beautiful breakfast buffet in the open air courtyard.  Several evenings we chose to stay in for dinner because we wanted to try more items from their dinner menu.

A  special treat at the Hotel Catedral in La Paz was the rooftop pool, lounge and bar.  We spent a delightful afternoon with the bartender practicing our Google Translate skills and sipping Mojitos.

I highly recommend the charming town of La Paz over the touristy Cabo San Lucas if you want to visit the Mexican Baja Peninsula, and enjoy gracious accommodations at the Hotel Catedral in La Paz.
