Surviving January in the Upper Midwest requires some serious daydreaming. I thought a quick roundup of sun and sand would do us all some good. Today, Go Learn Things will help you find your happy place beach.
Poʻipū,Beach Park in Koala, Kauai is a little beach community on the southern shore of Kauai. The park has changing rooms and lifeguards. This is the most popular beach on the island. Several crescents of white sand beaches curve along this southern coastline. There are spots perfect for swimming, snorkeling, surfing and scuba diving, or just chillin’ on a chaise with a cold one. Several resorts and watering holes fringe the beach.
The Big Island Hawaii
The Big Island has a few stretches of white sand beaches but most of the island is black lava rock.You would think it would be hard to find a happy place beach on this terrain. But…
Pololu Valley stretches out into the ocean along an elegant black sand beach. This is not a beach for swimming in the crashing surf but it is a gem. The vistas from the cliffs above are truly breathtaking. At the end of the short steep hike lies a lush verdant valley. Pack a picnic lunch and spend some time absorbing the beauty.
Ambergris Caye, the scuba-centric island of Belize, provides white sand beaches, and some of my favorite diving in the world. Not to mention incredibly friendly residents. Sharing this picture certainly took me back to a happy place beach.
Last year I wrote a post about Why Divers Love Palau, but beach lovers will love Palau as well. The Palau Pacific Resort had its own sparkling beach, but each little uninhabited island throughout the region had pristine beaches as well.
Baja Peninsula Mexico
Playa Balandra La Paz, Mexico makes many “best beaches” lists and you can see why. This remote, protected is about 30 minutes outside of the Baja capitol city of La Paz. There are 8 beaches circling this bay and one small parking lot. You can kayak the beach through the salt lagoon and mangroves if you prefer an eco-friendly travel mode.

Granted this concept requires an active imagination and perhaps some meditation. But close your eyes and dream warm sandy thoughts.
